Adult Learning Skills Program
General Education Development Program
The General Education Development Program is designed to prepare the student (English or Spanish speaking) to pass
the GED examination, the equivalent of a high school diploma. Although
Olive Harvey South Chicago Campus offers GED preparatory instruction, the
Educational Testing Services (ETS) administers the actual GED examination
at testing sites located throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs.
The GED certificate is issued by the
Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Students that are interested in
taking the official GED test should contact a college advisor to make
necessary arrangements for the next GED test date.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program
The Adult Basic Education Program (ABE)
is designed to help students with limited reading or mathematics skills
improve their reading, writing, speaking and basic mathematic abilities.
Students
enrolling in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program are given the Tests of
Adult Basic Education (TABE) to determine the student's reading and
mathematics grade equivalent. The student is then placed in the appropriate
level.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
This three level Program is designed to
assist the student in becoming more proficient in speaking, understanding,
reading and writing the English language. This program is focused primarily
towards non-English speaking students. Students registering for an English as a Second Language (ESL) class are given the
Basic English Skills Test (BEST) and the Comprehensive English Language
Skills Assessment (CELSA) to assess the student's pre-class English
language skills. Course placement is determined by these test results and
oral reviews.
The Citizen Preparation Program
The South Chicago Campus offers the
Citizen Preparation Program. This program is designed to assist the student
who wishes to become a citizen of the United States in preparing to take
the USA Naturalization Examination. The Citizenship Program incorporates
materials such as: Federal, State and Local Government, English vocabulary,
the U.S. Constitution, U.S. history and the Naturalization process.
Literacy: English or Spanish
The Literacy program is available in both
English and in Spanish. The Literacy Program is designed for the student
with little or no reading and writing abilities to become proficient in
these basic skills.
